Especially most glass bowls need a screen, a stone or a glass pearl or something to prevent dumping of the bowls contents.

They are placed in the bowl before filling it. Also with bowls which don't need a screen they come in handy because if nothing else they help keeping the downpipe clean by preventing lumps to pass down.
